Discovering joy in the hard places

Cultivate Through Interceding

Genesis 18:22-23

God’s cultivating a heart of compassion.

This conversation between Abraham and God always confused me and still does to an extent. Yet, I found today in reading it that something new struck me.

God wants to destroy Sodom and all the people in it due to their wickedness. Abraham speaks up and asks God to spare the town, after all, what if there are 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 righteous people? God easily and quickly says if there are even 10 of those people, He will spare all of Sodom.

It always surprises me that God would even have this conversation when He knows there are no righteous people. Besides, He is God, He should be able to destroy what He wills to destroy. Yet, God has such love and mercy for His people in this instance.

He also shows His desire for us to work with Him in love and mercy.

He wants Abraham to feel compassion. He wants Abraham to ask for mercy, to have a heart for the people of Sodom. Because of this situation, Abraham’s compassion and heart for other nations grows.
