Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

Not safe, but Good

“Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.” – C.S. Lewis

Not safe, but good. What does that mean?

I don’t think we can begin to understand or experience this truth without facing some form of danger in our lives.

The Bible says in following Jesus, we should expect trouble, but I think many well meaning believers follow Jesus and expect safety. They expect the comforts of life to surround them always. They expect calm waters, financial prosperity, every dream fulfilled.

No, that is not what God does in the life of His servants.

And, in fact, I think the closer you get to Him, the more dangerous life becomes because He is not safe or safe to follow.

He called us to lay down our lives and take up our crosses. There is no safety in that.

So, the closer we get to Him, the more dangerous our journey. We will face trials and hardships. We will find ourselves in stormy waters.

However, we will also experience His goodness. How? Honestly, I’m still learning and probably will never understand it fully.

“He’s the King”. He’s the King of the storms. He’s the King of danger. He’s the King of death and the cross.

He is good. This, we may not always see or feel as we are tossed by the waves, but it’s the truth we can cling to.

We can’t expect safety, but we can expect His goodness towards us and our dangerous situation. In fact, our dangerous situation is scared of Him because He is not safe.

But we need never be afraid of Him for He pours out only goodness towards us.

We have befriended the Lion of Judah. While others should fear His strength and wildness, we may rest near Him and know He will be good to us.

We may not be safe in this world, but we are sheltered by His goodness.
