Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

Stranger Things Fanfiction

I use this blog for posting all my creativity, but I recognize the audience I have is for specific art forms, like devotionals and poetry.

I do not want to spam your email with other writings, but I do want to start sharing my other works.

I have been writing Fanfiction for a long time, unable to resist diving into the beautiful stories in tv shows, movies, and books. I have written a Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, even Last of Mohicans fanfiction, but never shared these with others. I did it for fun, for my own enjoyment, loving to put myself, as a made up character, into a story and go on an adventure.
I have decided to start sharing this particular fanfiction because I believe it is good and entertaining AND I want to see if others feel the same.

Steve Harrington was my draw to write a fanfiction about Stranger Things. Set after season 2, I felt like Steve had had the most character growth and has the most potential.

My story is about a girl named Stephanie with a tragic past and a passion for journalism. Her cousin, Max, writes her letters about Hawkins Indiana, monsters, the upside down, and a girl with powers. This sparks her journalistic heart and leads her to the town to write a story. Instead, she discovers family, friendship, romance, horrors, and answers to her past.

It is a developing story and I am excited to share it with you.

Below is chapter 1, an intro to the story. And here is the link to the site that I will post it on:

Real World Upside Down

Chapter 1 Origins

Since Stephanie was twelve years old she’d known exactly what she wanted to be. At 12, Stephanie was faced with an annoying dilemma. Her kid sister was incredibly unhappy. Stephanie had vowed, after her parent’s divorce, that she would do everything in her power to make her kid sister happy.

Sure, the reason for her sister’s unhappiness was juvenile and in the scheme of things, futile, but to Stephanie that did not matter.

Her sister’s most treasured possession, her Malibu Skipper Barbie doll, had gone missing. Truth is, Stephanie hated that doll. She had nothing against Barbies, though she had long out grown them, she simply hated that her sweet little sister with curly brown hair, tan skin, and dark eyes and eyelashes desperately wanted to look like the bleach blonde haired, blue eyed, pink lipped Skipper doll. Her sister felt that Skipper was pretty and she was not. Stephanie tried to tell her that she was beautiful too, but it made no difference, and she loved that doll.

The fact that it went missing the night after her mom left for a “business” trip made it even more difficult.

Stephanie learned, after she turned 11, that her mom’s “business” trips were really trips for her mom to spend a weekend with a strange man she had met at a bar or club. Sometimes they were weekends and sometimes a little longer, it just depended on how much money the strange man possessed.

So, Stephanie, watching her kid sister on her own, vowing she would never let her be unhappy, found her sister crying and screaming for her Skipper doll. Steph searched the house, the yeard, and up and down their street.

As she walked down the neighborhood street, she saw one of their neighbors who often pretended to be “gardening” in her front yard, but was usually just spying on everyone else.

She asked the neighbor if they had seen the Barbie. No.

Had they seen her sister outside recently? Yes.

Did they see her playing with anyone or talking to anyone? Yes.

Who? Jenny.

Jenny was a kid from down the street, who played with her kid sister sometimes.

So, Steph made her way to Jenny’s house and confirmed her suspicions. Sure enough, Jenny had slipped Skipper into her backpack the last time she had been at Steph’s house. Jenny’s mom, feeling sorry for Stephanie and her sister, returned it without hesitation and scolded Jenny harshly.

As silly as it may sound, not only did Stephanie save her sister’s day, but simultaneously Steph realized her dream of being an investigative journalist.

There may have been other events and facts that influenced that turning point in her life, but she will always tell you it was because of her sister and that darn missing Skipper doll.
