Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

Minor Musings over Movies: Fireworks

I love this scene in Lord of the Rings where Gandalf has arrived in the Shire, driving his wagon, and the children flock to him excitedly.

They expect fireworks from him and as he rides along with no fireworks in sight, their faces fall and they question him with a twinge of disappointment.

Then, suddenly, beautiful fireworks go off and the kids clap and laugh. Gandalf smiles.

Why does this stick out to me?

It reminds me of God and His delight in surprising us. Sometimes He delays and we feel disappointment but He is not finished and the surprise and delight to come is that much better because it’s unexpected.

And as we get our fireworks, answers to prayer, blessings, which He surely gives, God smiles heartily.

If you are waiting and disappointed, God cares deeply about that, but He also has a smile on His face just knowing what is coming to you in His perfect timing and ways.
