There’s a scene in Lord of the Rings that powerfully illustrates how God can and will speak to us.
Frodo holds the ring of power and stands on the a lakeside shore. He is on the edge of choosing to step onto a difficult and lonely path.
Tears in his eyes, he thinks these thoughts: “I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.”
He faces a moment of despair, pain in his heart, doubt for his path, and longing for peace and ease.
Immediately, Gandalf’s voice rings out clear in response: “So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”
And with courage renewed, Frodo steps out in faith.
The Holy Spirit speaks to us in a samilar way. As we read God’s word, pray, and know Him more, we will still find hard times, moments of doubt, despair, and we may have similar thoughts to Frodo.
But in comes God’s voice, His reminder. It may be a verse that comes to you or God’s voice itself, speaking encouragement, or a worship song. Whatever it is, it will speak directly to your heart, your feelings, your situation and IT will lift you up and give you the courage to step out in faith.
