Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

Narrow Path

Sometimes I ponder

The path I walk

Which at times

Is strictly bound

I find it narrow

And hard to travel

Then I can’t help

But look upon

The other paths

They have such ease

And smoothness

Such broad roads

And many of my desires

Are like flowers

Easily picked and enjoyed

But on my path

My desires are harder to find

They cannot just be picked

Off the side of the road

So I contemplate these different paths

The one which seems so easy and free

And the one I am on

Which can feel challenging and strict

What if I were to travel the other

Just for a time

Just to experience those desires

To pick the flowers

And take in their scent

To just have ease

Yet for only a second I consider this change

For the path of ease

May give me freely

Desires which I have not now

But it does not hold

The deepest truest

Desire of my heart

It does not have on it

The One I want to walk with

The One who guides me

Frees me

Knows what is best for me

And I would not trade

The path which the One walks on

For one which holds even

A thousand desires

Nothing compares

To walking with Jesus

Whatever the path may be like

I freely choose

Again and again

To walk with Him

On narrow paths

Through valleys and storms

Because Fellowship with Him

Is sweeter than

Any flower I can pick
