Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

Say Her Name

A woman afraid

in her home

in her heart

A mother

cooking for her children

protecting her loved ones

seeking help

seeking safety

trusting

Brought to fear

Brought to her knees

Brought to begging

and apologies

Cursed at

threatened

shot

Because she was black?

Because a white man

in a uniform

saw her as a threat?

Did not see her as a human?

If she had been white

would she have lives?

If she had been white,

would more people cry out?

The color of her skin

played part in her murder

So let’s say her name together

in grief and outrage

Sonya Massey

was murdered in cold blood

because she was black

And once again we sing

through tears, anger, and in sackcloth

BLACK LIVES MATTER
