Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

No Christ in America

I no longer recognize

the face of Jesus

among Americans

For Jesus fed the hungry

healed the sick

welcomed the stranger

Did not throw a stone

Cleared the courts

prevented violence

American Christians

want their guns

make church a business

throw stones at everyone

except those that look exactly like them

Deport strangers

only care when they are sick

choose the bible

over feeding the hungry

There is no trace

of Christ

in them

I’ve not seen Christ in America for much of the last decade to be honest. Probably longer. I think I just spot evil in every political side, many school systems, most of social media, and so on. And I agree that so many churches are missing the point. Finding that which aligns truly to Christ is narrow and few, that’s for sure.

I struggle with this gun issue. I get not shouting in favor of guns since it’s in bad taste, and guns aren’t a toy, but removing guns from responsible people doesn’t stop criminals and evil people from finding and using them. I just pray I never encounter someone with a weapon. If all I had was shouting and prayer, and my legs to run, I’d do anything to survive. But when I think of school shootings, where at minimum security officers could have been armed, my heart breaks that they either weren’t armed or there wasn’t security of any kind. Guns ARE violent, even in responsible hands, but I can’t say I’m totally against them if I had to protect children or even myself.
