Joyful Ruins

Discovering joy in the hard places

When Clothes no Longer Fit

I have had some clothes hanging in my closet for over a year that no longer fit me. Mostly because I have changed in size and body shape. I outgrew them one way or another.

Sorting through them, I have held onto some and not to others.

Some pieces I had so obviously outgrown, I donated them without a second thought. But there were other pieces I hoped I’d be able to fit into again. I held onto them because they were a gift or they expressed who I was.

Recently, I tried on a flowery bohemian jumper that I suspected did not fit but, out of love for it, hoped it might.

Low and behold, it still did not fit me.I decided to let it go. And that got me thinking.

Like clothing, we may outgrow things in our life, be it places, people, roles, beliefs. Some we may hold onto longer than they fit because they connect us to something, someone, or they looked good on us once upon a time.

We can hold on, but the likelihood of them ever fitting again are slim.

In the end, just like it is not the clothes that make the woman (or person), it is not the role, the friends, the place or beliefs that make you, you.

It is ok to outgrow them and move on.
